Got out with it this morning. Started raining on my way to the range, but I said SCREW IT and just got wet. Put 100 rounds of the Centurion slugs down-range and was blown away by the Ghost Ring sights. This gun is amazing!

Here's one of my targets from 50yds...

Not bad for a 20" smooth bore!

:D Thanks Pondy!

The gun did all the work, I just pulled the trigger. I plan on tightening up my 50yd groups a lot more on my next trip and then pushing it out to 100yds. Should be fun...

You are making me want to put ghost rings on my 870 Lazy!

I seldom shoot my shottie ..... it just sits in the closet waiting for the zombies to attack. I really need to take it out to the range again soon but I have too many other guns to shoot and practice with. Too many priorities, not enough time. Sigh.

I hear ya Pondy.

The Ghost Rings make all the difference for range shooting with slugs. My other scatter gun just has a front bead and sits waiting in the safe for the next opportunity to splatter melons at my buddy's farm...

Hey LES! I have a 500 Cruiser 8 shot w/pistol grip. I'm kinda like Pondy, waiting for zombies.. But I bought a factory shoulder stock for it, so they interchange. Do they make those ghost rings for the 500? I also like that forend! Where can I find them for the 500?

Hello Ransom,

Parts for the 590 and 500 will be interchangeable. They could be called 500 series parts and upgrades. The only exception is that most 500/590 heat shields won't fit the 590a1 due to its thicker walled barrel.

I picked up both my forends from m1surplus.com. Great customer service and fast shipping. Here's a link...

As for ghost rings, it's the same story. They will fit both 500 and 590 (and a1 models), however the front sight base will have to be silver soldered to the barrel so gunsmith installation will be required.

I'm thinking about picking up a Slugster at some point, will have to remember to get a ghostring put on it. :)

You can also look into picking up a new barrel from Mossberg that already has the front GRS installed. New factory barrels usually don't run more than $200. With the cost of the front sight base, gunsmithing, and shipping to and from, you may come out ahead just buying a new barrel.

For an even cheaper solution, check out ATI's deluxe heat shield with GRS...

http://www.atigunstocks.com/p-67-deluxe-heatshield-with-ghost-ring-sights.aspx

Of course it won't be nearly as stable as true mounted GRS, but it's a LOT cheaper and less complicated to install. Only issue is that the heatshields have a tendancy to move around a bit during fire.

Thanks for the quick reply and the great information. Mine already has the heat shield, but that forend looks tasty! I saw your other reply that recommends just getting a different barrel, that sounds like a less expensive option, and would leave my original, Uhmm, Original!! Thanks again....

EDIT Ooops.. I just check the link in your other post for the ATI shield W/GRS. That fits my wallet much better! For my use, that looks very good!

Slugster, nice!

Yeah, the GRS are an amazing tool for consistent shot placement. It's almost always gonna be cheaper to get them as a factory option rather than adding yourself down the road.

Yep, that makes sense. I'll see if I can get it ordered in with the GRS pre-installed. Or else Barrel #91315 has an integral scope mount which gives me options, just need to remove the mossy oak finish. :).
the Slugster is a good choice for me as the range I'm a member at doesn't allow shot and sells 12ga non-Mag slug rounds fairly cheaply.

I'm in the same boat. My local range does not allow shot so it's slugs only. I found a great deal on Centurion 1 1/8oz slugs @ SGAmmo. 250rds for $80...

http://www.sgammo.com/product/centurion/250rds-12-gauge-centurion-1-18-oz-slug-275-inch-1400-fps

These are what I was shooting @ 50yds in the photo I posted further up in this thread...

... also, the barrels with integral cantilever mounts built in are great, but you'll get a lot of wiggle in your optic due to the movement in the barrel. For about $10 you can mount a picatinny rail to the top of your receiver that will offer the same versatility and will be a LOT more stable...

I ended up opting for the ATI heat shield W/GRS. Not as stable as hard mounted sights, but for my purposes should work well.. I'll let you know after I fire a few slugs.. Thanks for the info, Again..
