Teach me to garden up north! (Zone 5b)

    Hi,

I'm moving up north and getting married this year, lots going on and happy times!

Being a gardener living in a semi-tropical area most of my life I now will get to learn how to garden in zone 5b, temps I'm told will drop to like -25 in Jan.

When do I start veggie seeds? (what month)

What can you tell me about gardening up there, so far I've learned that tomatoes hate the heat and I haven't had one good tomato season in SC! My favorite tomatoes are the heirloom called Black Krim. Does lettuce grow in the summer up there? Any info will be appreciated! :)
Don't make me turn into my ultimate self

I don't know either but we're looking to move to the same zone. It's definitely going to be a learning experience having been in Tx and S Florida all my life. One thing I'm trying to figure out is a way to keep a greenhouse tolerable year round without costing a small fortune to heat.

Okra, grits and collard greens don't grow up north.

The first thing you need to learn about up north is SNOW is a 4 letter word.

Zone 5b that's warm. I live in zone 4a. Yea gardening is a little different up here, but isn't that tough once you get used to it. I'm currently way down south, in Missouri for a wedding, and don't have access to my planting calendar. When I get home I will give you the dates I plant stuff.

Something of interest for Arctic gardeners like Gyrkin.. Walipini. An underground greenhouse that uses the natural heat of the Earth for most of the heating. Just run a search for both terms. There's a lot of information and it looks pretty promising especially if one had the means to make a large one.

Search for or Contact the local State Extension agency. They have lots of info that is local to your location.
