New acquisition! Springfield Model 840, 30-30 rifle

Neighbor having a moving sale - this used to be her brother's rifle. She does not use it and wanted it to go to someone she knew and would use it and offered me a great price. I have a side rail scope mount on the way and Sierra Trading Post has the Pentax Gameseeker on clearance for $119.00 so I think I'll be ready to shoot by next week. Ammo - damn! Pricey, this won't be a range gun that's for sure.

I've got an uncle that still hunts with his old 840 30-30. It's a great shooting rifle and has no trouble dropping a whitetail.

I have to say I bought 2 Game Seeker II's and trust those over the original Game Seeker though they all have great glass. One was the 3x9x50 for my 20" AR, and the other a 3x9x40 for my Anniversary Edition Marlin. I paid 75 for one shipped, and 79 for the other. One off of ebay, and the other for Sportsman's Wearhouse. Much better that 119. Now someone on ebay is selling them for 69 shipped http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pentax-Games...item1e6e338dad In you choice of 3x9 or 4x12 make me want to buy another one.

To admit my ignorance, I didn't think anyone made bolt action 30-30s. It was my assumption that this type of action was for long range flat shooters. That is a good looking rifle though, TGC!

Really looking forward to getting out with it. That's a pretty good sized round it shoots too. Reminds me of the Mosin Nagant 7.62X54 - but that's the reason I got it. I needed a deer rifle. I have the Saiga AK-74 as a disposable SD / SHTF weapon and it's no hunter, and the AR project is on hold until I get some home repairs & improvements, a wood burning stove and outdoor gear. I also got a Mossberg 500 .12 Ga. for my son in the deal so I'm one happy camper.

Looking for an owners manual for the 840 - but it seems that this has been out of production for some time.

It's not an owner's manual, but you can find complete assembly/disassembly instructions for your Springer 840 (identical to the Savage m340) on page 424 of...

"The Gun Digest Book of Firearms Assembly/Disassembly, Part IV: Centerfire Rifles".

Or, you can download here for $3.99...
